City Council to vote on final paid sick leave legislation

A majority of City Councilmembers announced their support today for an amended version of C.B. 117216, a bill that would provide paid leave to employees in Seattle when they or their family members fall ill or fall victim to domestic violence. An estimated 145,000 to 190,000 employees in Seattle currently do not have access to this benefit.

Making Seattle more accessible and responsive to our immigrant and refugee communities

Today the Energy, Technology and Civil Rights Committee passed Resolution 31316 that aims to improve outreach to Seattle’s diverse immigrant and refugee communities. According to the most recent available demographic data, 17 percent of Seattle residents are from immigrant and refugee communities. Spanish is the language Seattle most often provides translation and interpretation for, followed by Chinese, Vietnamese, Russian, Somali and Korean.

Council committee to discuss police body camera pilot project

News Release
The Energy, Technology and Civil Rights Committee, chaired by Councilmember Bruce Harrell, will host a special discussion on the proposal to outfit Seattle Police Officers with body cameras. Several community leaders and proponents of camera technology are expected to express their support for deployment of this technology.

Seattle City Council President commends WSDOT as the Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement project continues forward

City Council President Richard Conlin released the statement below in support of the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), following federal approval on the Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement project's record of decision. This approval completes the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) process, allowing construction to continue forward.

Seattle City Councilmember Licata issues statement on police misconduct records ruling

City Councilmember Nick Licata issued the following statement on today’s police misconduct records ruling:

“The state Supreme Court’s ruling today that law-enforcement reports on police misconduct are a matter of legitimate public concern and should be made public advances police accountability. The court also struck the right balance in allowing for personal identity redactions when not found guilty to protect the legitimate privacy interests of public employees.

Seattle City Council seeking audit committee candidates

City Councilmember and Budget Committee chair Jean Godden announced today two open positions on the newly formed Audit Committee. This committee was established by Ordinance 123622 to assist the Office of the City Auditor bring about more open, accountable, performance-driven, and results-oriented government. It is intended to be insulated from political pressures and influences in order to provide an independent opinion on the performance of City departments and programs.
