Seattle City Councilmember Tim Burgess, chair of the Council's Public Safety and Education Committee, announced today the nomination of Claudia D'Allegri, Elizabeth Holohan and Dale Tiffany to serve on the Seattle Police Department's Office of Professional Accountability (OPA) Review Board. The three nominees, selected from a pool of more than 60 applicants, will be considered by the Committee on Wednesday, Sept. 21.

The Seattle City Council today approved Council Bill 117216 with a vote of 8-1 (Council President Conlin voting no), requiring businesses in Seattle to provide paid leave to employees when they or their family members fall ill or victim to domestic violence.

Mayor Mike McGinn and City Councilmember Sally Bagshaw today announced recommendations for community center operations in the City's 2012 budget, based on a data-driven analysis and process to examine several models for staffing and operating community centers. These recommendations reflect a savings of $1.23 million in staff and operating reductions and will be included in the mayor's proposed 2012 City budget.

Today the Energy, Technology and Civil Rights Committee passed Resolution 31316 that aims to improve outreach to Seattle’s diverse immigrant and refugee communities. According to the most recent available demographic data, 17 percent of Seattle residents are from immigrant and refugee communities. Spanish is the language Seattle most often provides translation and interpretation for, followed by Chinese, Vietnamese, Russian, Somali and Korean.

City Council President Richard Conlin released the statement below in support of the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), following federal approval on the Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement project's record of decision.
