KEXP – Powering Up at Seattle Center
I am proud to say that “I power KEXP.” KEXP taught me that Fleet Foxes are not indigenous to Discovery Park and Built to Spill is not a code violation. Great music truly does build great community. That’s why it’s so exciting that this listener-powered radio station, which started out in UW’s MacMahon Hall almost [...]
Seattle City Council approves paid sick leave legislation
News Release
The Seattle City Council today approved Council Bill 117216 with a vote of 8-1 (Council President Conlin voting no), requiring businesses in Seattle to provide paid leave to employees when they or their family members fall ill or victim to domestic violence.
Taking Care of Business – our “Wellness Bill”
For the past few months as the Paid Sick Leave debate has waged, I have spoken with many business owners about the proposed bill. I’ve repeatedly heard “it’s too complicated.” “This isn’t the right time.” “Why is government interfering in my business?” I have spent weeks meeting with dozens of community leaders including representatives from [...]

News Release
Mayor Mike McGinn and City Councilmember Sally Bagshaw today announced recommendations for community center operations in the City's 2012 budget, based on a data-driven analysis and process to examine several models for staffing and operating community centers. These recommendations reflect a savings of $1.23 million in staff and operating reductions and will be included in the mayor's proposed 2012 City budget.

This afternoon in High Point, I stood with Mayor McGinn and acting Superintendent of Parks and Recreation, Christopher Williams, as the mayor announced his preferred option for the future of our community centers. Mayor McGinn will incorporate our Option #2, or the Geographic Management and Service Level option, into his 2012 budget. It is unusual [...]

Seattle Center measures its success by how well it fulfills its mission of engaging a rich and varied community, and even the most casual of visitor crossing the campus understands the accuracy of that statement. As a visitor onto the campus, you might marvel at the acrobatic moves of a teen skater in the skate [...]

Out of a pool of applicants, twenty-five people from Washington State will be chosen. Each will be paired up with a mentor, and over the nine months leading up to the start [...]
New jobs & an economic boost via proposed Seattle Tourism Improvement Area initiative
One week ago, I asked the “Question of the Week” via my Facebook page. We are at the peak of Seattle’s summer and I inquired, “Where do you take your out of town guests?” Answers varied on what constituted the hidden gems – perhaps the places or things an average Seattle visitor wouldn’t know to [...]
