Councilmember Maritza Rivera (District 4) voiced her support of the Washington State Attorney General’s decision to join litigation against the U.S. Department of Education and Office of Management and Budget for the Trump administration’s withholding of $7 billion dollars in education grants.
“As an elected official and a public-school mom, I am so proud that Washington is joining with other states to force the federal government to uphold its responsibility. I know how important these grants are to our kids, our teachers, and our schools,” said Rivera, who is the Chair of Seattle’s Libraries, Education and Neighborhood Committee. “This is hateful, unacceptable, and illegal.”
“This funding was approved by Congress and to withhold it at the last minute – leaving the State and school districts scrambling – is not only shameful but a betrayal of US and Washington taxpayers.”
The federal grants were expected to be awarded on July 1 and included funding for programs for K-12 students, technology in the classrooms, professional development for teachers and principals, programs for English learners, and more.
