Today the Seattle City Clerk, on behalf of the City Council, posted the qualified applicant list of 22 candidates for the District 5 vacancy, pursuant to City Charter requirements. Applicants were invited to submit a resume, cover letter, and completed financial interest statement form by last Wednesday, July 9.
A list of the eligible applicants and completed application materials are available to the public via the Council Vacancy webpage. The councilmembers are expected to announce a list of finalists during their meeting next Thursday, July 17.
Background
Councilmember Cathy Moore resigned her seat on the Seattle City Council, effective July 7, 2025, leaving a vacancy on the Council. The City Charter gives the Council 20 calendar days to fill a vacant Council position, which ends on July 28. From the date of the appointment, the newly appointed councilmember will serve until the 2026 General Election results are certified and a successful candidate has been sworn in.
Public forum
In accordance with Ordinance 125479, the Council will choose a community organization that will convene a public forum where candidates will be interviewed. Two organizations applied to be considered to host the public forum. An announcement with more details on the host and forum will be made at Council Briefing on Monday, July 14.
Next steps
The Council will hold a special meeting next Thursday, July 17, to determine finalists. The date of the public forum is anticipated to occur on or about July 21.
Interested members of the public are encouraged to check the Council Vacancy webpage for the latest updated information on the process.
