Councilmember Rivera statement on proposed B&O exemptions for Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and Seattle Children’s Hospital

Councilmember Maritza Rivera (District 4) released the following statement on today’s Council vote related to the business and occupation tax proposal.

“Non-profit institutions like Fred Hutch and Children’s provide comprehensive critical and life-saving care to kids and cancer patients in our city. Not only are they losing Federal research dollars, but they will also be hit hard by the Trump Administration’s severe cuts to Medicaid.

“This tax proposal was brought to shield Seattle from the harm of Federal cuts. Protecting cancer research, and children and cancer patients who will suffer from cuts to care should be a priority. Saddling these institutions with an additional tax burden, all the while they are getting their funding cut by the Feds just makes no sense and does not support our residents when they need it the most.”
