Today Councilmember Maritza Rivera (District 4) responded to the Seattle Police Department’s (SPD) plan to permanently station three Neighborhood Resource Officers, working in shifts as pairs, at Magnuson Park to increase patrols in the park, nearby neighborhoods, and the University District.
“I am pleased to hear police officers will now be permanently stationed at Magnuson Park. In response to my continued requests for attention to the public safety issues at the park, and the data that supported the need, Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes created a pilot to increase police presence in the area. That community policing pilot had positive, concrete results and, according to the SPD, during the 3-month trial period the Neighborhood Resource Officers were responsible for 64% of all arrests made in the area.
“I want to thank Chief Barnes for his responsiveness, as we worked together to address the concerns of the D4 residents. Chief Barnes and North Precinct Captain George Davisson have been great partners.
“I support Chief Barnes community policing efforts, and I look forward to meeting the Neighborhood Resource Officers who will be serving our D4 community and welcoming them to the District.”
