Today Councilmember Bob Kettle (District 7), issued the following statement after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions this week in Seattle, the shocking killing of a bystander in Minneapolis by agents, and nationwide demonstrations last night in response to the agency’s unprecedented tactics.
“Yesterday’s tragic killing by an ICE agent highlights our worst fears and confirms what I and others have been stating for months: ICE’s approach to its mission actively undermines local public safety and puts our entire community at risk. My thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends and the Minneapolis community during this time of loss.
“This tragedy was entirely preventable, and this type of reckless conduct is unacceptable. As I repeatedly emphasized, it undermines the progress we have worked hard to accomplish here in Seattle. While federal law enforcement agencies have the right to conduct their duties within the city, we expect them to carry out their missions unaided by our local police, except in clear emergency situations, and in a safe manner.
“I remain deeply disappointed in the lack of professionalism and standards shown by ICE agents— including wearing masks and face coverings. As a city we hold the Seattle Police Department to a high standard of accountability and expect the same level of discipline and standards from our federal public servants. The federal government’s approach to public safety in all jurisdictions should prioritize the well-being of the people it serves, not jeopardize it.
“It is a concerning time for our city and its immigrant communities, but I and our other leaders are steadfast in our support. As Chair of the Public Safety Committee, I will continue to address and speak to these issues and work alongside my Council colleagues, Mayor Wilson, and City Attorney Evans toward our shared goal of creating a safer Seattle for everyone.”
