Today in anticipation of the large demonstrations scheduled for this weekend, Council President Sara Nelson (Position 9), Councilmember Joy Hollingsworth (District 3), and Councilmember Bob Kettle (District 7) released the following joint statement. This morning, Council President Nelson also joined state and local leaders at a press conference discussing public safety preparations.
Seattle fully supports the right for people to peacefully protest. This is a vital part of our democracy and our First Amendment rights. Peaceful demonstrators everywhere are proud American patriots standing up to protect the Constitution of the United States of America and the fundamental freedoms it gives us.
To those who are showing up in peace—we ask you to be mindful. If you see someone struggling to control their emotions or actions, ask them respectfully to step away. Help keep this space safe and focused.
We support our first responders, who often face difficult situations while working to keep our city safe during these situations. Let our actions reflect the strength of our convictions. We’re focused on what matters—our Constitution, democracy, and our collective rights. This is the spirit of our Seattle Values.
