Hello Neighbors,
As you may be aware, tomorrow the “No Kings” protests are expected to take place in Seattle and across the country. There will be large protests happening in the city, including in the University District. There will be a protest in Red Square starting at noon, that is expected to last for several hours. Simultaneously, commencement will be taking place at Husky Stadium.
Today, I joined Governor Bob Ferguson, Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, Mayor Bruce HarrelI, Council President Sara Nelson and other local elected leaders to both decry the recent actions taken by the Trump administration and to ask for peaceful protests.
Anger and frustration is understandable, amid the Federal administration’s egregious actions of the last weeks and months, and the overreach and aggressive tactics being used against immigrant families, children, and even elected officials. I support your right to raise your voice in protest. When we are feeling helpless, being together in public gives us a sense of strength and unity and it is our constitutional right.
For those protesting tomorrow, please do so peacefully and safely. The Trump administration would love nothing more than to see Seattle fall into chaos and use that as an excuse to bring in federal forces and make our city a national example. We cannot let that happen.
Be safe out there.
Sincerely,
Councilmember Maritza Rivera
Seattle City Council // District 4
