The proposed committee is aimed at identifying responses to emerging changes in federal policy which could threaten vital City programs and funding
Seattle City Councilmember Alexis Mercedes Rinck (Position 8) announced today she has officially called for the creation of a Select Committee on Federal Administration and Policy Changes. She released the following statement:
Throughout the past week, we have seen a flurry of executive orders coming from the new presidential administration challenging the rights and livelihoods of many of our residents, and the health of our institutions. Many organizations, programs, and people within Seattle rely on federal funding to carry out their work and live healthy lives. What is clear is that major changes are underway on the federal front, and local leaders must be tuned in.
That is why I am proposing a dedicated select committee to identify strong local responses to changes in the federal government which threaten funding to the City of Seattle. The changes in funding could impact areas including but not limited to housing, public safety, transportation, emergency and disaster aid/response, climate change, public health, human and social services, immigration, nutrition, economic development, small businesses, and education.
My office continues to hear from residents about the deep concern they have about how these changes will impact our community. As an elected leader of this city, it is time for me and my colleagues to step up. I look forward to working on practical solutions with my colleagues.
Councilmember Rinck has formally asked Council President Sara Nelson (Position 9) to stand up the Select Committee on Federal Administration and Policy Changes, effective immediately.
