Seattle CityClub has been selected to host a public forum for the community to engage with the final six candidates applying for the District 2 (southeast Seattle) vacancy on the City Council. Seattle CityClub has a 40-year legacy of creating impactful programs to engage voters and hold elected officials accountable. As a leader in civic initiatives, the organization regularly hosts local events for open discussions to empower residents and contribute to Seattle’s vibrancy.

The public forum will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 21, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Columbia City Theater, located at 4916 Rainier Avenue South in Seattle. The forum will also be streamed live on the Seattle Channel. The public is encouraged to submit questions for the nominees ahead of time through Sli.do. Tony Benton, Rainier Avenue Radio’s station manager, will moderate the discussion.

After looking at a pool of 20 candidates, councilmembers voted earlier today at a special meeting to move forward with six finalists.

Each of the finalists is required to participate in the public forum and Jan. 23 special Council meeting in order to move forward in the process to fill the Council vacancy.

Background

The vacant position was created when former Seattle City Councilmember Tammy Morales resigned from her council seat earlier this month. Seattle is divided into seven Council Districts, with one councilmember representing each district, and two citywide positions. The vacant slot represents District 2 which includes Beacon Hill, Chinatown-International District, Columbia City, Seward Park, Little Saigon, New Holly, Rainier Beach and Yesler Terrace.

What’s next

The Council will meet again on Jan. 23 at 1 p.m. to hear candidate presentations and interview the candidates. A vote on the final appointment is expected to take place on Jan. 27. The successful candidate will need to gather a simple majority of five votes from the Council.
