Councilmember Lewis Announces Two Additional Public Opportunities to Provide Feedback for the Seattle Park District

Seattle, WA – Councilmember Andrew J. Lewis (President of the Seattle Park District Governing Board and Councilmember from District 7, Pioneer Square to Magnolia) announced two additional town hall meetings today for the Seattle Metropolitan Park District renewal process. The Park District is a supplemental funding source for Seattle parks that Councilmembers will vote to renew in their capacity as Park District Board members.

The additional town halls will be held on:

  • Monday, August 15 from 6-8 p.m. at the Rainier Beach Community Center
  • Wednesday, September 7 from 6-8 p.m. at the Northgate Community Center

Councilmembers/Park District Board members Lisa Herbold (District 1) and Tammy Morales (District 2) will participate in the August 15th town hall, while Councilmembers Lisa Herbold, Alex Pedersen (District 4) and Sara Nelson (Citywide) will participate in the September 7th town hall.

“It is essential that the public have every opportunity to engage in this process to decide how taxpayers’ dollars will be used to ensure our parks and city facilities are open, safe, and accessible to all,” Councilmember Lewis said. “By adding in-person town halls in North Seattle and South Seattle we can ensure that every Seattle resident has the opportunity to attend a meeting near them.”

Both additional town halls will be in-person only and attendance will be capped at 100 with mask-wearing strongly encouraged. The Park District Board already had one public hearing at City Hall on July 14th with many people choosing to call in. The Park District Board also has in-person and call-in opportunities for public comment before every board meeting. The initial spend-plan proposal from the Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners also included a 90-day public engagement process.

Furthermore, Board President Lewis is holding three in-district town halls for District 7 constituents to participate in the renewal discussions, and other Councilmembers have had town halls recently as well.
