Council President M. Lorena González (Position 9, Citywide) released the following statement after Congress passed the American Rescue Plan:

“The final passage of the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan is tremendous news for the people of Seattle.  This bold legislation will provide the City of Seattle with at least $239 million in robust local funding.  For Seattle, this means additional resources for COVID-19 vaccine distribution and massive economic relief and assistance for our families, children, workers and small businesses is on its way.

“Across Seattle, families will receive survival checks and expanded unemployment assistance.  Locally, people can anticipate that the City of Seattle will be in a better position to address the ongoing need for food access, emergency rental assistance, mortgage and utility assistance, and childcare.  Lastly, the American Rescue Plan is a life preserver for our small businesses, especially the restaurant and hospitality industry, which continues to bear the brunt of public-health restrictions.

“The Seattle City Council will, in the coming weeks, consider legislation to prioritize the areas of spending for the American Rescue Plan funds, under the leadership of Budget Chair Teresa Mosqueda (Pos. 8, Citywide).

“I want to thank Seattle’s Congressional Delegation for stewarding this bold, progressive and critically-important legislation that will benefit countless of American people and thousands of people in Seattle.”
