Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda (Position 8, Citywide) announced the Select Committee on Budget schedule to consider Councilmembers Kshama Sawant and Tammy J. Moralesprogressive revenue tax proposals, which would fund COVID-19 relief.

Mosqueda created the committee schedule, which will start April 22, in consultation with the Office of the City Clerk, Council Central Staff, Council Communications, the bill sponsors, and the Council President’s office, to ensure public comment and input can be heard on the legislation and that the legislation is heard with the urgency the crisis calls for.

“The need for financial resources to address the COVID-19 crisis is overwhelming, and I appreciate Councilmembers Sawant and Morales’ efforts to address our community’s needs during the coronavirus emergency and beyond,” said Mosqueda. “My committee will ensure any conversation surrounding new revenue will take into account the current economic crisis, while also considering the inequities many Seattle residents face, which the virus and economic impacts have exacerbated on vulnerable community members and small businesses. I look forward to discussing this important piece of legislation with my Council colleagues in the weeks to come.”

The following committee schedule is subject to change and it is the prerogative of the Chair to add more committee dates if necessary to ensure a transparent process:

  • Committee Meeting April 22, 10:00 a.m.: Council will receive a preliminary economic forecast update provided by the City Budget Office, and an outline of the legislation’s three bills (CB 119772, CB 119773, CB 119774) from Council Central Staff.
  • Committee Meeting April 29, 10:00 a.m.:  Council will receive an outline of any legislation not covered in the previous meeting; Council Central Staff will answer Councilmember questions.
  • Committee Meeting May 13, 10:00 a.m.:  Council will consider any amendments, possible committee vote.
