Councilmember Kshama Sawant (District 3, Central Seattle) released the following statement after Mayor Jenny Durkan delivered her 2020 State of the City address:

“Our Tax Amazon movement to fund social housing and the Green New Deal has powerful momentum, so it’s not surprising that corporate politicians like Mayor Durkan are eager to do the bidding of Jeff Bezos and other billionaires who are attempting to get a state ban on big business taxes. And it’s also not surprising, though it’s disingenuous, that the Mayor failed to mention the threat of such a ban in her State of the City address. Our movement strongly supports county-level big business taxes in addition to an Amazon Tax in Seattle, but any kind of ban on big business taxes would be a historic selling out of working people, especially in the state with already the nation’s most regressive tax system.”
