SEATTLE Councilmember M. Lorena González (Position 9, Citywide) issued the following statement in reaction to the Force Review Board’s preliminary results in the pending investigation of the death of Charleena Lyles:

“The preliminary results of the Force Review Board’s (FRB) pending investigation into the tragic death of Ms. Charleena Lyles were reported on Tuesday (November 15).  It is unclear why that information was disseminated to local press before the full completion of the process, which typically includes a review by the Chain of Command.

“At this juncture, a final report of those deliberations is not available for my review.  I remain interested in understanding whether the FRB or the Chief of Police will recommend any policy or training modifications as a result of the FRB’s review of this incident or the separate Office of Police Accountability investigation.

“It is critical for us to await the results of the full investigations — rather than read about them first in the newspaper — so that as policymakers and community advocates we can begin to identify areas in which we can improve Seattle Police Department policies and training to protect our communities from what may be preventable deadly encounters.”
