Seattle City Council to proclaim Seattle a ‘Human Rights City’
Seattle – Councilmember Bruce Harrell, chair of the City Council’s Public Safety, Civil Rights and Technology Committee, will introduce a resolution at committee this week proclaiming Seattle to be a Human Rights City in celebration of the 64th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The proclamation reaffirms and deepens Seattle’s commitment to strengthen and improve the impact of laws and policies on local communities by working to protect civil, political, social, economic, and cultural rights, regardless of race, color, sex, language, religion, or political opinion. Seattle has implemented the declaration’s principles through the Race and Social Justice Initiative, a citywide initiative to achieve equity for all residents. It will be critical to look through this lens as the City executes the Department of Justice Police Reforms beginning next year.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was drafted by the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, chaired by Eleanor Roosevelt, and was adopted by the United Nations in 1948.
