Sally Clark and I have been working our way around the city, going from neighborhood to neighborhood, inviting folks to join us for “Coffee with the Sallys” to start off the day with a little chat, or a question and answer session. So far we’ve been in Interbay, First Hill, Madison Park, West Seattle (actually, that was “Cider with the Sallys” — yum!), and the University District, and our next stop is Bitter Lake, in North Seattle

I love these events. They’re relaxed and intimate, and they give me a chance to visit people in their community — and it gives people a chance to say more than the usual 2-minute talk allotted at public hearings. Basically, these coffees are our way of bringing City Hall to you.

And we talk about everything. I’ve talked with neighbors about public health and safety issues, disaster preparedness plans, and what sort of funding their local project might qualify for from the city. I’ve heard about dark blocks and dangerous intersections, successful traffic circles, about off-leash dog parks and ziplines, rent costs, schools, social media, speed limits, trees, chickens and elephants. It’s always fun, and always invigorating, and there’s always something said that I’ve never thought about before.
