Councilmember Kirsten Harris-Talley

SEATTLE – City Councilmembers selected and appointed Kirsten Harris-Talley this afternoon during a Special Meeting of the Full Council to fill the vacancy in Council Position 8.

Harris-Talley brings more than fifteen years of experience in advocacy to her appointment on the City Council.  Most recently she served as Program Director for Progress Alliance of Washington and as Program Manager for Cardea, a nonprofit offering training and development.

“Over the course of many forums, public meetings and a week-long application process, Kirsten Harris-Talley has demonstrated a commitment to community and emphasized the importance of transparency in government,” said Councilmember and President Pro Tem Rob Johnson (District 4, Northeast Seattle).  “I am pleased with Council’s decision today and look forward to serving alongside Ms. Harris-Talley as a colleague.”

“I nominated Kirsten Harris-Talley because she brings a fresh voice to the budget process and a commitment towards social justice, education, and underrepresented communities,” said Council President Bruce Harrell (District 2, South Seattle).

Harris-Talley lives in the Rainier Valley – Hillman City neighborhood with her husband and their two children.

The at-large position was left vacant in September when then-Councilmember Tim Burgess who was sworn in as Mayor of Seattle.

Harris-Talley received the Oath of Office this afternoon and will participate in her first Full Council meeting as a seated Seattle City Councilmember at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 9.

Harris-Talley will serve as Councilmember in Position 8 until King County certifies the 2017 general election results.
