Seattle City Councilmembers Rob Saka (District 1) and Joy Hollingsworth (District 3) brought forward a proclamation Tuesday recognizing this February as Black History Month in Seattle and celebrating Black trailblazers throughout the city’s history.

Mayor Bruce Harrell and every member of the Seattle City Council in attendance signed on to the proclamation. You can watch it being discussed and delivered via the Seattle Channel below.

This 2024’s Black History Month Theme is African Americans and the Arts. The proclamation reads, “this month is an opportunity to celebrate African American artists such Jacob Lawrence, James Washington, Jr., and Ernestine Anderson, and through the many activities at the Northwest African American Museum, the historic Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center, Historic Central Area Arts and Cultural District; Onyx Fine Arts Collective; Rainier Arts Center, Arté Noir, Wa Na Wari, and so many other great artists and activities.”
