Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda (Position 8, Citywide), Chair of the Council’s Housing, Health, Energy and Workers’ Rights Committee, issued the following statement after the election of Rep. Laurie Jinkins of Tacoma as Speaker of the House:

“Congratulations to Washington’s first female House speaker, Laurie Jinkins. Today’s news comes in a time of unprecedented numbers of women running for office and winning. Having had the opportunity to work with Representative Jinkins and watch her shepherd through complex policy with a wide variety of stakeholders, I know Washington state is in good hands. Representative Jinkins has a long history of working on public health issues and championing policies supporting working families, and I’ve appreciated working with her as a champion on paid sick leave.  I look forward to working with Speaker Jinkins in her historic new role and to supporting her leadership as she moves forward progressive solutions to issues facing all Washingtonians. I also want to acknowledge and congratulate all women candidates for speaker. It has been an honor and privilege to work with you all.”
