‘It takes tremendous courage…We stand with you’

Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda (Position 8, Citywide), Chair of Council’s Housing, Health, Energy and Workers’ Rights Committee (HHEWR), issued the following statement in response to the announcement by members of Teamsters Local 763 who voted to approve a strike:

“It takes tremendous courage, dedication and solidarity to go out on strike.  The members of Teamsters Local 763 have been working with American Medical Response (AMR), and with the City of Seattle for months attempting to reach resolution so they can make ends meet, afford healthcare and have stable schedules.  Many of these workers make just over $15/hour while providing life-saving services for our City’s residents.

“The Teamsters deserve our support – whether through standing on strike lines, working towards long-term budget solutions or an alternate vehicle for EMT services, and I stand at the ready.  While the EMT’s are on strike, many of our union brothers and sisters must continue their work so our City stays healthy and services don’t stop but are in full support.  While work continues, we will not be complacent.  Strikes happen for a reason.  Strikes aren’t easy on workers, on their families or on their community. We stand with you.”
