Councilmember Sally Bagshaw (District 7, Pioneer Square to Magnolia) issued the following statement about the siting of a new Navigation Center in Seattle:

“Everyone needs stable housing – including those who are struggling with mental illness or substance abuse or those who are camping out in this winter weather.  The new Navigation Center will provide safe and supported indoor space for people experiencing homelessness. I learned in San Francisco that the Navigation Center addresses many needs that other shelters can’t address, including space for possessions, pets, and partners.

“Support staff and residents will work together to create personalized plans to find permanent housing while providing the basics –  restrooms, showers, storage and a place to call home — for now.  I am encouraged that Seattle is providing 24/7 shelter and I am proud to partner with DESC to provide care and a pathway to a better life for our most vulnerable residents.

“I look forward to hearing more at Human Services and Public Health Committee meeting at 2:00 p.m. today. I will welcome Director of Homelessness George Scarola to the table to present the February update to the Bridging the Gap Interim Action Plan on Homelessness.”
