Saturday is Moving Planet Seattle Day!

Home » Saturday is Moving Planet Seattle Day!

Tomorrow, Saturday, September 24, I will be celebrating the international day of action on climate change, Moving Planet Seattle, by participating in two special events.

Starting at noon, Got Green is hosting an event to highlight the release of their report Women in the Green Economy, Voices from Southeast Seattle. This report is based on a survey of 200 mothers from Southeast Seattle that asks low-income women and people of color what their priorities are for the green movement in Seattle.

If you are not familiar with Got Green, it is a great organization here in Seattle that, in my opinion, is bridging the divide between environmentalism and social and racial justice. Here is the description from their website:

“Founded in 2008 with sponsorship from the White Center Community Development Association, Got Green leads community organizing efforts, public policy advocacy, and job training programs to ensure that the benefits of the new, green economy –green jobs, access to healthy food, energy efficient homes, and public transit – are widely available to low income communities of color.”

When: Saturday, September 24, 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
What: Presentation and discussion with Got Green and women who participated in the survey
Where: South Lake High School (8601 Rainier Ave S, Seattle, WA 98118)
Who: I will be joining representatives from Got Green and survey participants, including:

Afterwards, I will be biking over to South Lake Union Park around 2:00 p.m. to join my family and hundreds, if not thousands, of Seattleites for a rally to move beyond fossil fuels and celebrate September 24 as Moving Planet Seattle Day. On Monday of this week the Mayor and City Council signed a proclamation declaring “September 24, 2011 as a day for Moving Planet Seattle: a day to move beyond fossil fuels, beyond oil, beyond coal, as our city prepares the way for a peaceful transition to an abundant and positive future beyond fossil fuels for all plants, all creatures, and all future generations.” My sons, Wyatt (11) and Elliott (13), will be on hand to help read the proclamation.

When: Saturday, September 24, 2:00 p.m.
What: Rally for Moving Planet Seattle
Where: South Lake Union Park (860 Terry Avenue North, Seattle, WA 98109)
Who: Councilmember Mike O’Brien will be joining his family and hundreds of Seattleites, including guest speakers:
