Councilmembers May Try to Kill our Tenants’ Rights Bill by Sending it Back to Committee

Come tell Council: “Tenants Can’t Wait!”
We Need to Limit Move-In Fees Now!

On September 27, our legislation limiting move-in fees unanimously passed through committee with a 5-0 vote! This legislation limits security deposits and non-refundable fees, and requires landlords to give tenants the option of a six month move-in fees payment plan. In a recent survey of tenants, the Washington Community Action Network found surging move-in fees to be one of biggest obstacles to finding housing.

However, the conservative Washington Multi-Family Housing Association, who lobby on behalf of landlords, want councilmembers to delay the vote. They have asked councilmembers to send the bill back to committee, so it can be significantly watered down in its effectiveness. We need housing activists to come tell Council, “Tenants can’t wait! Vote to limit move-in fees today!”
