Councilmember O’Brien Statement following first meeting as Sound Transit board member
SEATTLE – Councilmember Mike O’Brien issued the following statement after finishing his first meeting as a newly-appointed member of the Sound Transit Board:
“I am proud to join Mayor Ed Murray, County Councilmember Dave Upthegrove, and fellow members from our region in our quest to continue developing a reliable transportation system for the tens of thousands of people who commute using this system every day.
“I first ran for office because of my interest in public transportation and its importance for our environment and our economy. I believe we must continue to grow our regional transit network for the more than 100,000 riders in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties who depend on Sound Transit trains and buses to reach their destinations each day.
“I also believe that expanding mass transit means shrinking the number of single-occupancy vehicles on the road in Seattle and in our region. As an advocate, a transit rider, as councilmember, and now in my capacity as a Board member, I look forward to engaging with the Board and the public to help shape a Sound Transit 3 package that will deliver the reliable, safe and modern transit system this region needs and deserves.”
